Schools and Higher Education

How IFST serves the schools sector

IFST has a dedicated website outlining the wide range of career opportunities in food science and technology which lists UK universities and colleges offering courses, from National Diploma to Postgraduate level. The list includes links to the university websites themselves and there is an interactive quiz for you to test your knowledge.

IFST also offers a resource list for lessons in schools.

The Science Council has an excellent web-based resource for students, teachers and parents that aims to redefine perceptions of the careers arising from studying science, technology, engineering and maths. Known as Future Morph the website targets students aged 11 to 19 years.

Schools' Affiliation Scheme

IFST's Schools' Affiliation Scheme is designed to support teachers of Food Technology within the context of the Schools' Science curriculum. The Scheme is primarily aimed at UK secondary schools but all interested schools are welcome to join. For just £42 for 2009/10 participating schools receive a range of benefits including:

  • Food Bites - a special newsletter each term for teachers
  • Food Science & Technology - IFST's quarterly magazine containing IFST news, views and technical articles
  • Each term, schools will receive complimentary copies of 'Food Manufacture' or 'European Food Scientist' which contain articles about the food industry and food science and technology.
  • Early notification of IFST's Information Statements and Advisory Statments
  • Access to information on careers and resources for schools
  • Eligibility for grants to attend teachers' conferences, e.g. international conference, 'Careers on Stage' and the popular summer school at Reading University

Sponsorship of Courses for Teachers

The IFST Board of Trustees has made funding available to sponsor short courses run by universities for secondary school teachers and further education course lecturers in the area of Food Science and Technology. The aim of the course must be to offer a public benefit by increasing the flow of qualified food scientists, technologists and engineers into all elements of the food knowledge and supply system. This is an excellent CPD opportunity for teachers to increase their knowledge in Food Science and Technology and, both directly and indirectly, have an influence on the career paths of their students.

For the academic year 2009/10 and onwards applications can be made at any time and applications will be considered as they are received. Click here for further information and application form.
