Cereals

It is an easy task to think of "healthy living" examples based around cereals.

With increasing advice to eat more wholegrain cereals just switching to the wholegrain varieties of pasta, rice and bread will in itself make an impact on our daily diets. Try and include some wholegrain cereals with every meal. Cereals are flexible enough to be eaten in many ways at all times of day. For example:

  • Start the day with breakfast cereals based on whole wheat or bran, oats and multi-grains, like muesli. Eaten with yogurt and fresh fruit, what could be healthier!
  • Then speed through the day with the original fast food – the much-loved sandwich with a healthy filling. As well as wholegrain breads, the tasty lunch could also be made with wholegrain pitta breads, bagels or tortillas.
  • Finish off the day with a sit-down dinner that includes wholegrain noodles, pasta or rice.

In fact, did you know that May 9th-15th 2010 is British Sandwich Week? Recognising the important contribution the sandwich makes to most peoples busy lives the humble sandwich has become a bit of an institution. Check out

But its not a new product – indeed it was the 4th Earl of Sandwich back in 1762 who invented the idea to enable him to eat while sitting at the gambling tables apparently!

And just before this one of the bread companies (Warburtons) has also designated a "National bread week" 3rd-9th May 2010.(http://www.welovebread.co.uk/home.html)

Maybe see how innovative and healthy your class can be with sandwich ideas that week! Perhaps even design and produce a healthy sandwich as part of a Design and Make Assignment.
