FoodStart - a golden opportunity to help students to get a taste of the food sector
To mark IFST’s 50th Jubilee this year, we have decided to address one of the major challenges currently facing the sector– the looming skills gap caused by insufficient numbers of new talent joining the sector. That’s why, with your help, we plan to launch FoodStart, a special project that will help the next generation of young food professionals take their first steps in a career in food.
As a valued IFST supporter, we’d like to ask you to donate today and help a young food enthusiast experience the sector.
IFST is a charity and independent professional body, making us ideally placed to address this issue – one that affects the future of the entire sector. Our solution is FoodStart. It will be a new-free-to use, one-stop website for food employers to promote their work experience opportunities (from schools based programmes to graduate placements and internships) for students at all levels who are considering a career in food. Students using the website will be encouraged to log and track their individual experiences, building towards a specially recognised portfolio of experience – a ready-made springboard into a career in the food sector.
Work experience is one of the best ways for young people to gain an understanding of the sector and to come into first-hand contact with the passion and potential that a career in food can offer. But our research painted a picture of the difficulties students have finding work placements and that businesses have in promoting their roles. Until now there has been no easy way for employers to promote their opportunities widely and many students have missed out on the chance to experience the right role in the food sector just at the point when they are considering their career options. As a result the sector is losing out on some of the brightest new talent. FoodStart will help change this.
