Protein Power: do we take our protein intake for granted??

Registration is closed for this event
Organised by IFSTs Food Science & Nutrition Group

Why not just what protein - but how much and when should be considered throughout life..

With so much focus on foods high in fat, salt and sugars it can seem as if these are the only nutrients that should be factored in when making food and drinks which meet the nutritional needs of a healthy population.  Following the successful Sugar - Friend or Foe and Big Fat Debate, we turn to Protein Power in our series* of interactive events about the key components of our diet.  While protein receives some attention and promotion - Atkins!  Protein Balls!  Protein World! - its presence in food and beverages can often seem like a 'fad' rather than the product of serious research.

This event will take up the challenge of bringing protein's role front and central.

While UK Dietary Surveys show that most of us consume adequate amounts of protein, the amount - and in some cases the nature - of the protein we require changes across life stages.  The panel will explore the latest science underpinning the role of protein, and individual amino acids, in a diet that can help maintain us to an active and healthy old age.

Session 1:  Dietary Protein :  intake across the life course.

Alex Johnstone will discuss the amount and type of protein required for health at different life stages.  Protein's role in appetite and satiety will be demonstrated, as will the influence of when we eat on health and well-being.  And with many of us living longer, insights into the key role of protein in healthy ageing might provide clues not only for personal nutrition but also product development.

Session 2:  Protein fortification of food & drinks:  opportunities and pitfalls.

Lindsey Bagley will explore the challenges of fortification with proteins and amino acids.  This is an area where it's not just a question of what to add for functionality but how to make a really good and tasty product.

Session 3:  The role of protein, and specific amino acids, in muscle recovery and conditioning:  applying studies in sportspeople to the wider population.

Mark Waldron specialises in the appliance of science to strength and conditioning in sport.  Using his recent studies with the amino acid leucine, and combinations of leucine with other amino acids, Mark will illustrate how supplementation can aid muscle repair and recovery, and shine a light on the implications for future applications, including in clinical settings.

Session 4:  We need to talk about Protein:  can recent Advertising Standards Authority rulings help to navigate what we can say in advertising campaigns?

Speaker:  Fionnuala Rice, solicitor specialising in food law at CMS Cameron McKenna

* The series will continue with Fibre - Taking the Rough with the Smooth, in the autumn.  Further sessions on micronutrients are planned.
