IFST Announces the Launch of National Food Science and Technology Week

The Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST) has announced the launch of the first-ever National Food Science and Technology Week from 5-12 June 2023. The landmark event will take place in June every year, with a series of digital and in-person events to showcase the best of the UK’s thriving food science and technology landscape.

The UK food and drink industry is the country’s biggest manufacturing sector by turnover, and bigger than automotive and aerospace combined; yet the industry is seeing lower numbers of young people entering careers in the sector. As the leading professional body of food sector professionals in the UK, IFST is deeply committed to engaging young people in food sector careers. With over 3,500 members, IFST aims to mobilise new and diverse audiences with the goal of advancing food science and technology.

The week has three key aims:

  1. To showcase the benefits of UK Food Science and Technology to the general public.
  2. To highlight the range of exciting career opportunities in the food sector for young people looking to start their career journey.
  3. To give expert insight into food sector careers, with the help of experts and specialists.

Throughout the week of June 5, IFST will be sharing testimonials from leading food sector professionals, who will be reflecting on their careers and giving advice. On 7 June, the Ecotrophelia UK final will be taking place in Holborn, Central London (link to press release), where seven teams of students from around the UK will be presenting innovative and sustainable food product ideas in a Dragons’ Den-style competition which is now in its 11th year.

Run by IFST and Campden BRI, the Ecotrophelia UK final is the perfect moment to showcase opportunities for young entrepreneurs in the food sector. On the same day, IFST will also be highlighting the fifth annual WHO World Food Safety Day, a key date in the IFST calendar which highlights the importance of safe food for all our lives.

“We are delighted to be championing National Food Science and Technology week this year,” said IFST Chief Executive Tim McLachlan. “Food science is something both every day and extraordinary. Every time we reach into the fridge or visit a supermarket for a tasty new product, at least one food scientist has been responsible to ensure what we are tasting is both safe and delicious.  There is so much to be proud of, and so much to showcase from the food sector, so to have a full week dedicated to this cause is something we at IFST are honoured to champion. There is a clear need to inspire new generations of food scientists and technologists, and we are excited to use the power of science to engage and inspire.”
