Types of membership
At IFST, we offer three levels of membership: Associate, Members and Fellows. All members are bound by an ethical code of professional conduct and can be eligible to join one of the professional registers.
Associate membership is a stepping stone into full IFST membership. It is suitable for those with an interest in food science and technology, aspiring professionals in the early years of their career, and students studying food science and technology.
Associate membership demonstrates your commitment to the sector and we will support you to upgrade your membership at the appropriate time. As an Associate, you'll have access to all the prime benefits of IFST membership, including discounts to events and publications, opportunities to network and a free copy of Food Science and Technology delivered quarterly.
Concessionary Associate rates for students and post-graduates
We offer concessionary rates to students and those in the first three years after graduation subject to documentary proof of status.
Members (MIFST) must meet certain standards of achievement based on a combination of academic qualifications and knowledge gained through relevant experience. You may also be eligible for full membership if you demonstrate a siginificant and continuing contribution to the development of food science and technology.
As an IFST Member, you are entitled to use the designatory letters MIFST.
Your application will be assessed by our Membership Assessment Panel (MAP) based on your work experience and level of your qualifications following a tariff point system. A successful submission for MIFST grade will typically take into account both your academic background and your ‘hands-on’ experience. You will also need to be supported by referees who can comment first-hand on your achievements.
Fellowship is our highest level of membership. It provides you with an independent recognition for your food career and achievements at a senior level.
As a Fellow, you are eligible to use the designatory letters FIFST.
To become a Fellow, you must be a Member of IFST (MIFST) or be eligible for Membership. You also need to have 5 additional years of senior experience and be able to demonstrate important achievements in your career.
Your application will be assessed by the Membership Assessment Panel (MAP) based on your work experience, level of your qualifications, level of seniority and quality of your achievements in the food sector.
If you are a new applicant for Fellowship or Membership, you will be temporarily admitted as an Associate member pending full evaluation of your application.
