New Government Strategy for Obesity – report published

Government plans to help tackle obesity were released on 27 July 2020. The Department of Health and Social Care revealed a strategy to tackle obesity across the UK, in light of the current pandemic. As part of the new strategy, a set of measures have been revealed, including a ‘Better Health’ campaign, led by Public Health England (PHE). The government is also planning to launch a consultation on alcohol calorie labelling.

The measures include:

  • A ban on TV and online adverts for food high in fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) before 9 pm
  • The end to retail deals, e.g. “buy one get one free” on unhealthy food
  • Calories to be displayed on menus for food businesses with over 250 employees (eating out)
