Young Scientist Competition - Northern Ireland Results

The Northern Ireland Young Scientist Competition was hosted at CAFRE – Loughry Campus on 23 May 2018. The Young Scientist Competition offers undergraduates and postgraduates based in the UK the opportunity to present a food-related project to a panel of food professionals. All finalists receive 1 year's free membership of IFST + £50.00 prize.

The grand prize was won by Katie Kirk of Queen’s University, Belfast for her presentation on producing a standard protocol for rice cooking to lower GI to provide consumers with diabetes greater flexibility in food choice. She received a £500 prize with an additional £500 to be paid in 6 months on the condition that she is employed in the food industry.

The runner up prize was awarded to Maeve O’Hagan from Queen’s University, Belfast for her presentation on a novel approach to cooking rice to remove cadmium. She received a £250 prize with an additional £250 to be paid in 6 months on the condition that she is employed in the food industry.

Congratulations to all the students who delivered presentations and a big thank you to the judges who attended the event and provided feedback.
