Safe and Local Supplier Approval (SALSA)

Developed by experienced food safety experts to reflect both the safe and legal requirements of producers and the enhanced expectations of 'best practice' for professional food buyers, SALSA is a robust and effective food safety certification scheme suitable for micro and small food producers and suppliers.

SALSA approval is only granted to suppliers who can demonstrate to an auditor that they are able to produce and supply safe and legal food and are committed to continually meeting the requirements of one of the SALSA Standards.

SALSA Scheme Ltd is a non-profit joint venture between FDF, NFU and UK Hospitality. The Institute of Food Science and Technology accredits the Scheme throughout the UK.

SALSA certification has been designed specifically with small and micro producers in mind and benefits businesses who are looking:

  • To supply at a local, regional, national or international level.
  • For a recognised third-party food safety certification which demonstrates they are producing products in a safe and legal manner.
  • For guidance and support to develop a food safety management system appropriate to their business size.
  • To gain confidence to approach regional, national and international buyers with their brands or own label products.
  • For guidance to remain up-to-date with changes to food law and food labelling.
  • To avoid the high costs associated with other schemes which are designed for larger operations.

Since its launch in 2007, the Scheme has supported thousands of small producers to supply retailers and food service companies. From online supermarket Ocado to family holiday company Center Parcs, many of the UK's leading retailers and food service buyers recognise SALSA approved suppliers.

Only those on the IFST Register of Professional Food Auditors and Mentors may become a SALSA auditor or mentor.
