Professional Food Sensory Group

Between 1999 and 2014, the Professional Food Sensory Group (PFSG) was a separate professional register, open to IFST Members and Fellows who were qualified and experienced in food sensory science. Its aim was to provide professional recognition of food sensory scientists and improve food sensory practices. In April 2014, the original PFSG was formally closed, pending launch at the IFST Jubilee Conference of a new Register of Professional Sensory Scientists to provide a more robust form of registration for those involved in food sensory science.

The PFSG was also involved in a wide range of activities which included hosting an annual sensory conference, regular discussion workshops and accreditation of sensory training, These activies will now be continued via a wider Sensory Science Group, which is open to all members.

Professional Food Microbiology Group

Between 1994 and 2011, the Professional Food Microbiology Group (PFMG) was a separate professional register, open to IFST Members and Fellows who were qualified and experienced in food microbiology. Its aim was to provide professional recognition of food microbiologists and improve food microbiological practices. In November 2011, the original PFSG was formally closed.  

Food Premises Inspection Qualification

The Food Standards Agency requires all inspectors of higher risk food premises working in a food hygiene enforcement authority in England, Wales and Scotland to hold the Higher Certificate in Food Premises Inspection. Between 1994 and 2005, IFST was the examining body for one route to attaining this qualification. IFST maintains a register of those who have been awarded the Higher Certificate by the IFST route.

Those currently wishing to obtain this qualification should contact the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health in England and Wales and the Royal Environmental Health Institute in Scotland). Anyone wishing to obtain qualifications in the food standards element should contact the Trading Standards Institute for information on the DCA - Food and Agricultural Standards.

Graduate Diploma in Food Science and Technology

Between 1979 and 2000, IFST was the examining body for the degree equivalent Graduate Diploma in Food Science and Technology.

Mastership in Food Control

Between 1978 and 1995, IFST was the examining body for the masters equivalent Mastership in Food Control, covering all aspects of food control. Holders are entitled to use the designatory letters "MFC".

Postgraduate Diploma in Food Control

In the late 1990s, IFST was the examining body for this masters equivalent qualification covering all aspects of food control.

Supplementary Certificate in Food Science & Technology

In 1995, IFST offered this qualifying certificate for professional membership.
