About the Food Consortium IDLA

The Food Consortium Industrial Doctoral Landscape Award (IDLA) is a new doctoral training programme, bringing together leading UK food manufacturers and Universities to address the challenges facing the UK food and drink sector. The consortium is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, welcoming applications from all backgrounds and fostering an environment where every researcher can thrive.

What is an IDLA?An IDLA is an industry-led doctoral training initiative - a collaboration between industry and top UK universities, to support cohorts of PhD studentships. It combines research-led innovation with industry placements and applied training, including digitalisation, AI, and policy, to build the skills to make students ‘industry ready’.  Participating in an IDLA programme has the additional benefit that students are part of a larger community of students working on food sector challenges.

What are the objectives of the IDLA?

  • Develop future leaders and innovators for the UK food industry through world-class training and collaboration.
  • Focus research on consumer-centric and environment-centric food design, supporting healthier, sustainable products.
  • Build capacity and expertise to help the sector meet net zero ambitions and drive positive change.
  • Foster a diverse, inclusive community of researchers, ensuring accessibility and support for all.
