Professor Paul Berryman

Professor Paul Berryman is Food & Drink Investment Specialist for the UK Government’s Department for International Trade. His role is to increase foreign direct investment by developing world-class R&D and business opportunities in the UK’s Food & Drink sector. He provides expert advice on all aspects of UK food and drink science, production and labelling. Previously he spent 3 years as DIT’s Agri-Tech Specialist promoting the UK’s novel Plant Science capabilities. With 30 years’ experience, Paul has worked at senior level with most of the top 100 global food companies. Paul runs his own consultancy Berryman Food Science Ltd, working with both Government and Business. His clients include DIT, Fera, Food Standards Agency, InnovateUK, General Mills, Ingredion and SGS the global Inspection and Testing Group. He is also a visiting Professor of food science at the University of Reading.

Previously, he was CEO and Research Director of Leatherhead Food Research Ltd - a 150 strong research centre providing scientific and regulatory services to the Food & Drink sector. Key platforms were Nutrition, Safety, NPD, Sensory and Regulatory Advice. Prior to this, he was Hampshire County Council’s Head of Science & Food Standards where he directed an official food & agriculture control laboratory. He was a Public Analyst, Port Analyst and Agricultural Analyst and ran Hampshire’s Food Trading Standards Department.
Paul is current Chair of the Government Chemist Working Group which oversees the UK’s Referee food analysis function and he also sits on the Board of the AgriFood Training  Partnership (AFTP). His latest book is Advances in Food and Beverage Labelling.

 

Sam Jennings, Chair IFST Food Law Steering Group  

Sam JenningsSam Jennings provides advice to industry and governments globally on scientific, technical and regulatory aspects of food, particularly in relation to food supplements and functional foods. She offers support for dossier production for submission to the Commission and EFSA, particularly for novel foods, food additives and health claims. Since 2006, Sam has been Technical Adviser to the Council for Responsible Nutrition UK (CRN UK). She has been a member of the International Alliance of Dietary/Food Supplement Associations (IADSA) international Technical Working Group since its conception in 2010, and was appointed Chair of this group in 2012. She has been directly involved with the Codex Committee on Food Additives since 2013 and attends the annual meetings as Head of Delegation and spokesperson for IADSA, an accredited NGO under Codex Alimentarius.

Sam is a Fellow of the Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST) in the UK and is active on the IFST Food Law Group. She is also a member of the Institute of Food Technologists, USA and of the Society of Dairy Technology. Sam has authored and co-authored papers on a variety of food-related topics, and has also co-authored a number of chapters in books on food science, food technology and food law, a recent one of which has been translated and published in China and Russia. She was one of the editors of, and contributor to, the 3rd edition of the UK Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN)’s ‘Technical Guide for the Manufacture of Food Supplements’ (2009) and is joint editor, and contributor to, a new text book by the CRN UK Technical Committee (publication due early 2017). Sam has presented to governments and industry worldwide on topics including stability of food supplements, EU food law, GMP and other technical issues as required. She also runs tailored workshops for companies on EU food law and claims.

 

Andy Kerridge, Primority Ltd

Andy KerridgeAndy provides food safety & technology expertise to the food industry through his company, Wyvern Food Solutions Ltd.  He has over 30 years of experience in manufacture and foodservice, together with work in developing markets.  One part of his work is working with Primority Ltd who specialize in affordable, rapid deployment of food safety management and compliance solutions customized to the customer’s needs to deliver a centralized, comprehensive food safety management system.  The introduction of the Food Safety Modernization Act in USA, especially the Foreign Supplier Verification Program, has provided an opportunity for Primority with their software for supplier and product appraisals.  Andy is a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual and helps US importers and UK exporters to comply with the FSVP rule using the Primority software, 3iVerify.

 

Su Zhang, Ashbury Labelling

Su ZhangSu joined Ashbury Labelling in November 2013 as International Regulatory Advisor. She provides crucial regulatory advice to food and drink manufacturers entering and growing their export in the Chinese market. Su has a robust knowledge of food law and labelling legislations in many Asian countries including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and India.

Previously Su was a Food Technologist for a major food importer and distributor in the UK. She managed over 100 suppliers based in China, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece and South America to ensure technical and regulatory compliance of over 400 products. She combines a strong technical background with an understanding of the legal challenges and requirements both in the EU and Asian jurisdictions, bringing practical insights to our clients whether they are new or seasoned exporters in the region.

Su has an MSc in Food Science from the University of Reading, UK and a BSc in Food Science and Technology from Jiangnan University, China.
