This visit is organised by IFST Eastern Branch and is open to IFST members only

Since 1862, when James Parker Simpson founded his first maltings in Alnwick, Northumberland, Simpsons Malt has been a family business. Today, the 5th generation drives the brand forward as an independent, family-run business focused on providing the finest quality malt to the brewing, distilling and food industries. The company has two malting sites based in Berwick-Upon-Tweed and Tivetshall in Norfolk.
The Tivetshall site produces a wide range of malts from barley, wheat, rye and oats and is where the company has its state-of-the-art roasting plant. The tour will be led by members of Simpson’s and will include an all you need to know guide to how to make malt and speciality roasted malt products and a full site tour.
What will participants learn:
Visitors will be led through the entire process from raw material intake to finished product storage and despatch.
Target audience:
- Members of IFST interested in the science behind the production of fine malts for brewing, distilling and the food industry.
- Members who have an interest in working with Eastern Branch to raise the profile of IFST in the region and foster relationships with local producers
Booking Deadline: 1 April 2026
