Professional recognition and improvement lie at the heart of everything we do at IFST. With an ever-growing range of possible career development pathways within the food sector, it is now more important than ever to be recognised by a professional, independent body. We offer truly independent assessment against a set of well-defined and recognised standards to benefit you and your employer.
All of our professional recognition options ask registrants to sign up to a Code of Professional Conduct and expect commitment to maintaining Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Successfully securing registration with us demonstrates to your peers, employers and clients that you have a verifiable standard of competence in your field.
The Right Register for you
We know there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to professional recognition and improvement. To meet the differing needs of those in the food sector we have developed three specialist registers which recognise the varied experience and roles of our membership. We also offer Chartered Scientist, Registered Scientist and Registered Science Technician qualifications under license from the Science Council, as well as core membership upgrades in the form of Member of IFST (MIFST) and Fellow of IFST (FIFST).
Whichever recognition option you choose we will be there to support you. Whether you are just starting out in your first role, or an experienced professional with twenty years of experience, we can advise the right route for you to get the most out of our professional recognition schemes. As your experience and responsibilities grow, we’ll advise you on how to upgrade your recognition to keep on improving and developing.
Science Council Registration (CSci & RSci)
We award Chartered Scientist and Registered Scientist status under license from the Science Council. This form of recognition is a cross-speciality benchmark of your career development as a food scientist.
The Register of Food Safety Professionals (RFSP) recognises those working at all levels within food safety throughout the sector and helps to build a unified platform for food safety compliance across the food industry and safety auditing process.
This scheme was developed to meet the needs of food companies and auditing organisations to improve food quality and safety by assuring the calibre of professionals offering auditing and mentoring services.
The Register of Professional Sensory Scientists is aimed at those practising sensory science at a professional level and for whom knowledge or practice of food sensory science forms an essential component of their role.
Anyone who joins one of our professional registers will also become an Associate member of IFST. As a member of IFST you will receive a number of tangible benefits as well as a passport to knowledge, contacts and professional development at every stage of your career.
