Most of the UK population is not meeting Government recommendations in terms of dietary fibre intake, and deficiencies in intake of certain micronutrients have been identified in some groups. At the same time, there is an ongoing debate regarding 'ultraprocessed foods' (UPF). The conference will discuss the challenges and potential benefits of Food Systems to improve Health & Nutrition. The speakers have a wealth of experience in the topics and the conference will explore both from an academic and industry prospective.
There will be Q & A sessions following the talks given by the speakers.

Professor Janet Cade PhD, RNutr, FAfN - University of Leeds Professor Janet Cade leads the Nutritional Epidemiology Group, School of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Leeds. Her research explores the relationship of diet to chronic disease development. She has run the UK Women’s Cohort Study for 30 years. A particular focus has been development of new diet assessment methods and she is director of a University of Leeds spin out, Dietary Assessment Ltd, supporting a validated online dietary assessment tool myfood24, available for use internationally in research and teaching; and an app supports healthcare professionals and patients. She has also developed Nutritools, a resource for researchers to help select the best tool for measuring diet. She founded the first World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre in Nutritional Epidemiology and recently worked on a Nutrient Profile model for baby foods. With over 500 publications and £10M in research income, she has served on the UK Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food and as Honorary Secretary for the Association for Nutrition. |

As a company Cranswick is passionate about improving the nation’s health and believe manufacturers have a key role to play in making better choices easier for everyone. One of their main areas of focus is developing natural protein sources using simple, store-cupboard ingredients—creating fresher, better food that helps nourish the nation. |

Professor Chris Seal - Newcastle University Chris Seal is Emeritus Professor of Food and Human Nutrition at Newcastle University. He is best known for his research on cereal and carbohydrate nutrition; in particular he is an acknowledged international expert on whole-grain nutrition. He has managed some of the largest whole-grain intervention studies worldwide with funding from the Food Standards Agency, Public Health England and Industry. His broader research interests have been driven by multidisciplinary collaborations, including with industry, on food quality and health, and the effects of consumer behaviour on food choice. Chris’s work underpins efforts to establish legal definitions of ‘whole grain’ and ‘whole-grain food’ and he is a member of an International Task Force promoting whole grain consumption and setting national and international dietary intake recommendations. The presentation will provide an update on this process and will emphasise the importance of multi-agency collaborations to increase whole-grain intake and improve health. |
