Marie Kettlewell

Marie Kettlewell was recognised as Volunteer of the Week for her help with organising the University of Reading's student placement evening, where students who have recently returned from their year in industry present about their experiences. Videos of the evening will be available shortly.

How does it feel to be recognised as Volunteer of the Week?

It is an honour to be recognised as Volunteer of the Week, thank you!

What are the benefits of being a student member of IFST?

Being a student member helps you in getting started in the professional world of food, especially with the chance to network with people in the food industry, which is invaluable as a student. For example, at the LaunchPad event I attended, it was great to speak with inspiring mentors who advised us on the wide variety of career options in the industry.

Being a member helps you to keep up-to-date with the ever-changing food world, e.g. through events, the magazine and LinkedIn discussions; these increase your awareness of what’s going on in the industry and the challenges facing food companies.  Overall I would definitely recommend joining the IFST to all those studying food!

What would you tell people still in school about studying food science and technology at university?

To those who have a passion for food and an interest in science, I would recommend studying food science. One of the main things I enjoy is its relevance, because everyone eats food, so you can apply what you learn to the food you eat every day, as well as applying your knowledge in your future career.

Doing a course with a placement year gives you an insight into the industry and makes you realise how much work goes on ‘behind the scenes’ to produce our food and drink. It is very rewarding to see products on the shelf which you have contributed to!

As there are many interesting career opportunities after studying food science, I would encourage school students to get some work experience in a food company, as this gives you more of an idea about what it’s like and what areas interest you, and to attend events and talks if possible.

Tell us something about yourself that few people know.

I took part in the Stilton Cheese-Rolling Championships 2014 (yes, they do exist!) – it’s a lot harder than it looks but my team managed to reach the semi-finals!
