Government plans to introduce restrictions on adverts for food high in fat, sugar and salt

As part of its efforts to halve childhood obesity by 2030, the government has launched a public consultation on its proposals to ban TV and online adverts for food and drink high in fat, sugar or salt after 9pm.

The restrictions have been designed with a view to encourage industry to develop healthier alternatives. They will not apply to everyday staples like butter, oil or meat.

As part of the consultation, the government will consider the impact that further advertising restrictions may have on business, particularly broadcasters.

The closing date for submission of comments is 10 June 2019.
