The popularly presented image of packaging often fails to recognise the contribution that it makes to our modern lifestyle and exaggerates its environmental impact. Attention is usually focused on the waste generated by used sales packaging and ignores the fact that packaging protects far more resources than it uses and that it reduces overall waste. This presentation considers why this is and what INCPEN does to explain the role of packaging.

This presentation demonstrates how plasma discharge technology both vacuum–based and operating at atmospheric pressure can be a valuable aid to the food industry in a number of key areas. These include the production of enhanced packaging through plasma surface treatment and the deposition of the barrier and bio-active coatings, the direct use of plasmas in food preservation both inside and outside packaging and the use of plasmas for the detection of food borne bacteria. A brief introduction on plasma is given.
