Professor Mike Gibney, University College Dublin

Mike Gibney is currently the Director of University College Dublin (UCD) Institute of Food and Health alongside his role as Professor of Food and Health at UCD. (www.ucd.ie/foodandhealth). He took up this post in 2006 having been a professor of human nutrition in the Department of Clinical Medicine at Trinity College Dublin since 1984. Prior to that he worked at Southampton University Medical School as a lecturer in human nutrition. From 1973 to 1976 he was a teaching fellow at the University of Sydney Veterinary School where he took his PhD.

In addition, he is a former President of the Nutrition Society and has since served on many high-level international advisory committees both in the EU, the FAO and WHO His research combines public health nutrition and molecular nutrition and he coordinates some large national (www.ucd.ie/jingo) and international (www.food4me.org) grants, having published over 350 peer reviewed scientific papers. He has been Principal Investigator on several very large EU funded projects in the area of personalised nutrition (www.food4me.org).

Previous publications include ‘Nutrition, Diet and Health’, ‘Something to Chew On: Challenging Controversies in Food and Health’ and ‘Ever seen a fat fox: human obesity explored’.
